Say Goodbye

Berlin is a city where many people spend only a period of their lives and move on after a few years. It is the same now with povvera. After 8 years its spirit leaves the Philippistraße and we would like to experience this farewell together with you.
Since the opening on March 16th 2014, we could appreciate plenty of events in povvera. We had the pleasure to actually serve as a gap to give everyone the courage to demonstrate themselves here, according to our motto (Mut zur Lücke). In addition to our own happenings, group and solo exhibitions, many children's programs, film screenings, art and dance performances, concerts and lectures, art auctions, book launches, Christmas market, fanzine workshop and slam poetry evenings have taken place. povvera has also hosted private events, including film and photo shootings, pop-up stores, drawing lessons, Aikido, Tai Chi or laughter yoga classes.

On 16 June 2020 Rolf made a first drawing in Berlin Charlottenburg Kantstraße. This turned into a habit. Again and again - always in the evenings after work - he walked down the street and stayed somewhere to draw. Two years after he made the first, he shows these ink drawings in povvera.

In the exhibition "Untouched" the artist Sándor Barics presents works on the topic "Mars". In doing so, the artist focuses on the unspoiled state and originality of the enormous, lonely and at the same time fascinating, scarred surfaces of the Red Planet.

Andrew McSweeney (b.1992) is an Irish artist based in Berlin, Germany. Core to his practice isa the investigation of minor forms of painting, materials and space. His practice has strongly developed through the use of 3D software, with audio playing an important role in his installations. His work plays with the ideas of manipulation and control, or lack of, as well as simulation-imitation.
Emmet Brickley (b.1992) is a visual artist from Cork City, Ireland and is currently living in Berlin, Germany. Specialising in painting, he completed his BA (Honours) in Fine Art at the Crawford College of Art & Design in 2016 and was awarded the Alliance Francaise de Cork Exhibition Prize in 2017. Emmet has work in public, private and corporate collections, including two purchases by the Lewis Glucksman Gallery for the University College Cork Art Collection in 2016.
A live performance by artist/musician David Mathúna on the night performed on the opening night.

Architecture, without Architecture. Somewhere between Palissy and Superstudio

Alexander Johannes Heil solo exhibition
The exhibition will showcase a selection of works I created in 2017 and 2018. It is supposed to give an insight to my current working process, inspired by two images making a strong impression on me. The design for a cabinet by the artist and scientist Bernard Palissy (1510 – ca. 1590) and the vision of the Super Surface by the florentine group of architects Superstudio (1966). The works shown are meant to be interpreted personally and to give impulse to one’s own imagination. There will be no final conclusions, but infinitive space for free exchange.
Since I will move to The Hague in September to continue my studies at the Royal Academy of Art and the Conservatory, the exhibition is also a way for me to say “Good Bye” (or rather “See You Soon”) to Berlin and my friends. Come by, have a drink and discuss, associate and dream with me about nature, architecture and everything in between…

In my work, I am investigating the formal dialectics between nature and architecture. I am especially interested in the phenomenology of the tree, the mountain and the cave, which to me represent structural and spatial archetypes. I believe that the phenomena of nature evoke very direct, immediate and original emotions inside us humans. Experiencing nature is evidently good for our mind and body.
Since we are visual beings I believe that it is good for us to see things in our built environment whose design follows natural principles. I am interested in these relations between subject and object, and the dialectics of space, structure and the human inside of them. A closer investigation on them could affect both the reception of architecture, as well as architecture itself and its effects on the human mind and body.

The exhibition will showcase a selection of works I created in 2017 and 2018. It is supposed to give an insight to my current working process, inspired by two images making a strong impression on me. The design for a cabinet by the artist and scientist Bernard Palissy (1510 – ca. 1590) and the vision of the Super Surface by the florentine group of architects Superstudio (1966). The works shown are meant to be interpreted personally and to give impulse to one’s own imagination. There will be no final conclusions, but infinitive space for free exchange.
Since I will move to The Hague in September to continue my studies at the Royal Academy of Art and the Conservatory, the exhibition is also a way for me to say “Good Bye” (or rather “See You Soon”) to Berlin and my friends. Come by, have a drink and discuss, associate and dream with me about nature, architecture and everything in between…

In my work, I am investigating the formal dialectics between nature and architecture. I am especially interested in the phenomenology of the tree, the mountain and the cave, which to me represent structural and spatial archetypes. Collected Movies of Gabor Altor Jay: „50 Years Germany Are Not Enough”
8 – 11 March and 15 – 18 March, 6 to – 10 pm, Screening from 7 pm.
In the frame of "50 Years of Germany Is Not Enough Tour" two cultural institutions in the heart of Charlottenburg, povvera and Fischmarkt will present all movies of Gabor Altor Jay.
During two weekends, between the 8 and 11 and the 15 to 18 March the "Collected Movies" are screened three hours a day, starting on time.
An exhibition of documents accompanies the screenings: bizarre rejections, posters, storyboards, screenplays, set photos and screen tests. F. J. Kruger, Udo Kier, Christine Kaufmann, Dieter Thomas Heck, René Durand and Tom Dokoupil are to be spotted at the exhibition.
The films – partly in English and with English subtitles – were created between 1970 and 2014 and haven’t been shown in this compilation.

Finja Sander: Resonanzräume

Finja Sander, 21, born in Hildesheim, is an artist studying at the Berlin University of Arts. The photographic apparatus serves her work as an investigation tool for an aesthetic and epistemological examination. At the center of her research is her own self, its environment and its relation to it in its corporeality.
How can we act as bodily, human beings in space? How can we adjust ourselves in, or to, these rooms? Do we fill them out or do they fill us out?
Thanks to its alleged evidential value, the photographic medium can serve to assure phenomenon and reality. For example, while examining the functionality of a female body during pregnancy or experiencing tightness and closeness in confined space. What the imaginative eye can not see, the camera proves and can bring disappointment, where fulfillment was longed.

We touch the same staircase ramps, the same subway doors, the same toilets. We shake hands, drink the same tap water, we touch the same money.
We look at the same advertising posters, the same films, the same series, the same books.
We want to buy the same things, have the same ideas, share the same interests. We're connected.
When one is afraid, the others get scared.
Desire, joy and vices spread through the channels of trust.
The mental state is contagious.
A dance step, a new vocabulary word, a taste, a fashion trend is spreading along sidewalks in bars, clubs and vernissages. We either adopt it or reject it.
Something is contaminating the urban network and is now part of the cityscape.
We defend ourselves with words against infectious ideas. We defend ourselves with dreams against other dreams.
When we expose ourselves, we expose the others
The disease sets in. The state of weakness contaminates the colored mass. And as it moves around, it ends up brown.
Clothes as armour and words as weapons are no longer enough. And the last defence is to believe that you are unique, and above all better than the others.
Decoupling. Network breakdown. Every man for himself.
Contamination is invading. The spread of something between living organisms.
This exhibition "Contamination" is a rough draft. An essay on the streetscape and its aesthetics.
It's a reflection on the city as a machine. A mechanism that produces more than what it is done for.

Gallery Nomad will be guest at povvera on the fourth weekend of April and present the works of Doménico C V Talarico and Yosman Botero in one exhibition.
Talaricos' paintings are based on old photographs, which form a new visual language in abstracted form. Forgotten persons act as actors of an emotional narrative, forming a bridge between reality and fiction. The viewer is asked to question his own whereabouts and to put him in a context with the various actors involved. The aesthetics of passed times meets illustrative painting, thus mediating between the worlds.
Botero designs holographic images painted on glass panes, focusing on the role of the individual in society. He paints the separate fragments of an image in several layers to compose the subject in such a way that it reveals parts of his hidden identity. Through this kind of painting, he creates an illusory effect which makes the inner demons visible. A time-capsule that shows how reality is falsified by the growing lack of human contacts, and how we transform ourselves into our imaginary demons.
Live Act: Hikaru Inagawa is an actor, butoh artist, director and set designer. His career began with the Ku Na'uka Theater Company, with whom he performed worldwide from 1998 to 2004. Under Satoshi Miyagi, he learned traditional Japanese art, based on the Suzuki method. In 2005, he founded the Performing Arts Unit 4RUDE. Since 2011 he is learning Butoh from Yukio Waguri.

DISCOMFORT ON A TOLERABLE DEGREE - Performance and Exhibition in povvera

During the six days of the III. Hungarian Contemporary Dance Festival in Berlin / HCDF organised by Bakelit Multi Art Center, four Hungarian contemporary artists: Virág Bogyó, Judit Fischer, Gábor Kristóf, Dominika Trapp, members of the Studio of Young Artists’ Association, present a situation-specific spatial installation in povvera.
A handcrafted yoga mat-marquetry is going to serve as cushioning for the Hungarian contemporary dancer, Imre Vass and Dávid Somló’s piece, it comes it goes - contemplation over impermanence, on the opening event.
This highly functional artwork, beyond that it oughts to ease the physical impacts on the dancer’s body, translates the repetitiveness and tight-lipped toolbar of the dance piece into visuality. While It subordinates itself to a fleeting moment, puts hope in its permanence.
The Studio of Young Artists‘ Association (FKSE - Fiatal Képzőművészek Stúdiója Egyesület) is a professional organization, which has been functioning for more than five decades, always giving dynamic responses to current art and social issues. INTERTWINED: BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC FOR CELLO AND PIANO

Cellist Fred Malverde, teacher of the Global Music Academy, invites pianist Júlia Tygel for a concert featuring her original arrangements for cello and piano of Brazilian popular songs composers such as by Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and Guinga, intertwining popular and classical music.
The project was inaugurated with the release of Júlia’s first CD, “Intertwined” (Brazil, 2011), produced by Benjamim Taubkin and with the participation of cellists Adriana Holtz (São Paulo State Orchestra – OSESP) and Vana Bock (São Paulo University Orchestra – OSUSP), with whom she performs regularly.
The concerts following the CD’s release received great acclaim from both the general public and critics, and occurred in several theatres in Brazil, such as Museu da Casa Brasileira, SESC Vila Mariana, SESC São José do Rio Preto, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Casa de Francisca, Casa do Núcleo, Santander Cultural (Porto Alegre), Museu do Estado in Recife. In 2012 this program was presented in New York at venues such as Cornelia Street Cafe, Barge Music, Brazilian Endowment for the Arts and Tenri Cultural Institute, with support from the Brazilian Consulate. In the US, Júlia performed with cellist Jody Redhage, a member of Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society. Now cellist Fred Malverde joins the project for its first performance in Berlin.
BIOS
Fred Malverde is a Brazilian cellist living in Berlin. He teaches violoncello at the Global Music School and at the Atelier Klangvoll Musikschule, and regularly performs and organizes various projects involving musicians of diverse nationalities and backgrounds. Among these projects are the Avoado Trio (instrumental Brazilian jazz music), Cello and Harmonica duo with Endre Vazul (Hungary), Tom Brasil project (director and arranger), and Piazzolla Nights. He is also currently performing in duo with the renowned Syrian cellist Athil Hamdam.
Mr. Malverde holds a bachelor’s degree in Violoncello by Minas Gerais State University (UEMG), having also studied violoncello at Clovis Salgado`s Foundation, both in Brazil. He taught at several institutions in his home country, such as Sergipe's Conservatory of Music (Aracajú) and Anabá Waldorf School (Florianópolis). He composed and produced various tracks for theater and short films, the most recent being "Lilith" (EVOLOVE, Anima / Berlin, 2014), "O" (Samuel Moncharmont, France-Berlin, 2014-15) and "Come Back" (Damascus-Berlin, 2015).
Mr. Malverde have joined musical groups of different genres (rock, jazz, choro, tango and classical music), such as the cello and flute duo “Dupla Neta” with Cristian Faig, the string quartet "Catavento" with the composer and guitarist Felipe Coelho, and a voice and solo cello with the singer Cecília Kleine named Entre Mundos. He was a member of a number of prestigious Brazilian orchestras such as the Orchestras from the UFMG and UEMG universities (Brazil, 2002), Sergipe State Orchestra, Santa Catarina Filarmonia Orchestra and String Orchestra, in which he performed alongside great musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal, Sidy Ornelas, Mestre Salustiano, Baby do Brazil, Patrice Fischer (USA), Andersen Viana, Sylvia Klein and many others.
Mr. Malverde participated of Masterclasses taught by distinguished performers, including Dennis Parker (USA), Antônio Menezes (Brazil), Martin Ostertag (Germany), Nikolas Krassik (France/Brazil) and Maria Alice Brandão (Brazil), Maurício Carrilho (Brazil), and Léo Brouwer (Cuba).
Júlia Tygel is a Brazilian pianist and composer. She holds a PhD degree in music analysis with a thesis entitled “Béla Bartók & Heitor Villa-Lobos: compositional approaches based on traditional repertoires”, developed at São Paulo University (USP) with a visiting research scholar period at City University of New York (CUNY) as a Fulbright grantee. She concluded a master’s degree in Ethnomusicology at Campinas State University (UNICAMP), where she also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Composition. Her music combines a classical background with influences from popular Brazilian and modern music. In 2011 she recorded her first CD, “Júlia Tygel – Entremeados” (Intertwined), through a grant from Campina’s cultural department, which features her arrangements and compositions for chamber group, and has been showcased and performed at important venues dedicated to instrumental music in Sao Paulo and in New York. As a scholar, Júlia has presented and published several papers at conference annals in Brazil and abroad. The project was inaugurated with the release of Júlia’s first CD, “Intertwined” (Brazil, 2011), produced by Benjamim Taubkin and with the participation of cellists Adriana Holtz (São Paulo State Orchestra – OSESP) and Vana Bock (São Paulo University Orchestra – OSUSP), with whom she performs regularly.
The concerts following the CD’s release received great acclaim from both the general public and critics, and occurred in several theatres in Brazil, such as Museu da Casa Brasileira, SESC Vila Mariana, SESC São José do Rio Preto, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Casa de Francisca, Casa do Núcleo, Santander Cultural (Porto Alegre), Museu do Estado in Recife. In 2012 this program was presented in New York at venues such as Cornelia Street Cafe, Barge Music, Brazilian Endowment for the Arts and Tenri Cultural Institute, with support from the Brazilian Consulate. In the US, Júlia performed with cellist Jody Redhage, a member of Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society. Now cellist Fred Malverde joins the project for its first performance in Berlin.
BIOS
Fred Malverde is a Brazilian cellist living in Berlin. He teaches violoncello at the Global Music School and at the Atelier Klangvoll Musikschule, and regularly performs and organizes various projects involving musicians of diverse nationalities and backgrounds. Among these projects are the Avoado Trio (instrumental Brazilian jazz music), Cello and Harmonica duo with Endre Vazul (Hungary), Tom Brasil project (director and arranger), and Piazzolla Nights. He is also currently performing in duo with the renowned Syrian cellist Athil Hamdam.
Mr. Malverde holds a bachelor’s degree in Violoncello by Minas Gerais State University (UEMG), having also studied violoncello at Clovis Salgado`s Foundation, both in Brazil. He taught at several institutions in his home country, such as Sergipe's Conservatory of Music (Aracajú) and Anabá Waldorf School (Florianópolis). He composed and produced various tracks for theater and short films, the most recent being "Lilith" (EVOLOVE, Anima / Berlin, 2014), "O" (Samuel Moncharmont, France-Berlin, 2014-15) and "Come Back" (Damascus-Berlin, 2015).
Mr. Malverde have joined musical groups of different genres (rock, jazz, choro, tango and classical music), such as the cello and flute duo “Dupla Neta” with Cristian Faig, the string quartet "Catavento" with the composer and guitarist Felipe Coelho, and a voice and solo cello with the singer Cecília Kleine named Entre Mundos. He was a member of a number of prestigious Brazilian orchestras such as the Orchestras from the UFMG and UEMG universities (Brazil, 2002), Sergipe State Orchestra, Santa Catarina Filarmonia Orchestra and String Orchestra, in which he performed alongside great musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal, Sidy Ornelas, Mestre Salustiano, Baby do Brazil, Patrice Fischer (USA), Andersen Viana, Sylvia Klein and many others.
Mr. Malverde participated of Masterclasses taught by distinguished performers, including Dennis Parker (USA), Antônio Menezes (Brazil), Martin Ostertag (Germany), Nikolas Krassik (France/Brazil) and Maria Alice Brandão (Brazil), Maurício Carrilho (Brazil), and Léo Brouwer (Cuba).
Júlia Tygel is a Brazilian pianist and composer. She holds a PhD degree in music analysis with a thesis entitled “Béla Bartók & Heitor Villa-Lobos: compositional approaches based on traditional repertoires”, developed at São Paulo University (USP) with a visiting research scholar period at City University of New York (CUNY) as a Fulbright grantee. She concluded a master’s degree in Ethnomusicology at Campinas State University (UNICAMP), where she also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Composition. Her music combines a classical background with influences from popular Brazilian and modern music. In 2011 she recorded her first CD, “Júlia Tygel – Entremeados” (Intertwined), through a grant from Campina’s cultural department, which features her arrangements and compositions for chamber group, and has been showcased and performed at important venues dedicated to instrumental music in Sao Paulo and in New York. As a scholar, Júlia has presented and published several papers at conference annals in Brazil and abroad. She is currently a professor at Souza Lima College of Music in São Paulo, and long-distance professor at Federal University of São Carlos.

For the first time in history Lette-Verein's photo class of 2017 is presenting their work in a photographic centipede. (Think about a body with many legs)
It is shown as a visual improvisation, comparable to a jam session.
Every picture in a collective game is a reaction to the photo taken from another student in the chain before.
This ensemble of young, controversial creatives showcases a storyline which conforms less a dramaturgy of a literary work, more like an exciting, visual avantgarde.
Each student is selling a limited edition of their photographic answer to save up some cash for the graduation exhibition next year.
The images are presented in form of a digital installation.

Gonzalo Brown's song interpretations are based on his most recently released CD Bajo ningun concepto (Under No Circumstances) and lead through diverse musical currents, such as Candombe (Afrouruguayan Rhythm), Reggae and Hip Hop. This concentrate with a strong Funk Spirit invites you to dance.
As a solo artist Gonzalo Brown published 2004 UNDERBROWN. The CD was co-produced by Patricio Petruchelli (acid jazz musician), whose name stands for the idea more than can be seen at first glance. In 2008 the single follows No vamos a cambiar de bando and in 2015 his new solo CD Bajo ningún concepto, produced by Francisco Fattoruso (jazz and R & B musician), is created.

For his appearance in povvera, in the middle of his solo band tour, Gonzalo Brown is planning an extraordinary acoustic performance with drummer Vito Giacovelli. They play songs from the last G. Brown solo CD Banjo ningún concepto (Under no circumstances).
Vito Giacovelli is an Italian percussionist from Puglia, where at the age of 16 he discovered his passion for rhythm thanks to Senegalese percussionists. Since then, this passion has accompanied him as faithfully as gold in his artistic career. The discovery of African music led him to Rome, where he has various Mayors
learned percussion from Senegal, from Cuba, from Brasil. He plays several drums like congas,
Bongos, Timbales, Djambe ', Cajon, Pandeiro, Repinique, caixa ...
In his artistic career he deals with various musical genres such as jazz, ethno music, Latin jazz, salsa, samba, pop, rock. He has worked with well-known jazz musicians such as Gianluigi Trovesi, Bruno Tommaso, Steve Lacy, Fabrizio Bosso, Antonello Salis and Brazilian musicians Gilson Silveira.

About the musicians:
Athil Hamdan (Syria)
Started his musical education at age of seven on Violoncello. Achievements - M.Sc. in Musical Science and cello class Prof. P. Kupin Odessa National Conservatory in 1995. He played with many orchestras in Egypt, Jordan, Russia, Belgium and international youth orchestra. He gave many concerts as soloist and orchestra artist in several halls and countries such as (France, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Turkey, United States, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Egypt). He was first cellist at the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra.
Fred Malverde (Brazil)
He acquired bachelor's degree in Violoncello at UEMG (University of Minas Gerais, Brazil) in 2005. Before that, he studied classical guitar and violoncello at Clovis Salgado`s Foundation in Belo Horizonte between 1997 and 2000, where he became a member of the Guitar Orchestra and the Youth String Orchestra of the "Palácio das Artes" and also member of the 'Autêntica Jazz Band' as guitar and Banjo player. Fred joined musical groups of different genres (rock, jazz, choro, tango and classical music). Nowadays he lives in Berlin, playing and organizing different projects with people from different parts of the world (Avoado Trio (instrumental jazz Brazilian music), Cello and Harmonica duo with Andy Vazul, Tom Brasil project and also contributes to an ensemble of Kurdish music with musicians from Syria.)
Diala Hanana (Syria-Russia)
Born in Damascus, began to study piano at the age of six with C. al-Wadi at the Arab Music Institute and continued with V. Kuzmin and A. Abdu al-Laefa. After her graduation from school, she traveled to Russia to Study at the Glinka Conservatory, considered to be one of the best in the country. Graduated with honours and received a Master's degree in music with specialization in piano. Throughout the years Diala gave numerous solo concerts including one with the Syrian National Orchestra conducted By Solhi al-Wadi, that inaugurated the opening of the High Institute of Music, and played many chamber music Concerts at Damascus Opera House with famous Syrian Musicians. She also participated in many international music Festivals representing Syria, such as the Apple Hill Music Festival in Boston, USA and the Mediterranean Music Festival in Algeria.
Diala worked for several years as a piano teacher and a concert Master pianist at the High Institute of Music in Damascus and in the National Music Institute in Amman, Jordan.
Nadia Grohmann (Russia)
She started to study violin at the age of 6. Graduated from music school in Poland in 2000. Played in different student orchestras in Poland, Germany and Finland. From 2001-2008 she studied medicine and since 2009 she has been working as a doctor in Berlin. Since 2014 she gives concerts in a duo with a guitarist and since last year plays in the trio with Fred and Diala.

Whether it is to take an image, transform it into sounds and back into visual information, or to take fragments of memory to create a landscape of fiction and souvenirs, we all live in a virtual make up of deconstructed meaning formed by our paradigm, which makes sense in our cultural setting and time.
In a fragmented presentation of wonders and peculiarities, five international artists allow their deconstructed world in video and installation to take shape.

The glimpses, the body movements and the surroundings tell stories about us. These exact moments are eternalized by the artists. There is no time left to let anything slip through your fingers.
Fotografie Berlin e.V is a group of people who share the same interests about analog and digital photography. This exhibition is a wonderful way to show who they are and what they do.

Andyvazul is an award winning harmonica player, endorser of Seydel Harmonicas and composer, who performed in Europe as well as in the United States either with bands or as a solo-performer. His one-man-band performances take the audience to a psychedelic trip. At these shows he also plays the flute, santur, jew’s harp, accord and bass harmonicas and other authentic instruments, then he adds some crazy effects and creates layers with the loop station.A few years ago he started creating his own recycled instruments from pieces of his broken harmonicas, which made him experimenting with crazy-spacy sounds and playing some psycho-ambient music.
Recently he took part of an international Urban Art project in Thessaloniki, Greece, where he brought his idea to perfection. By hammering and welding metal pieces he built a new instrument (Hephaestus) using more than 80 broken harmonicas and recycled metal collected from the city. Not only has this instrument a unique metallic sound, but it is also a wind-, string- and percussion instrument in one, which opened up new opportunities for Andyvazul to improve his experimental music production.

The renovated walls of the exhibition space, in its unfinished, patched-up state, serve as point of departure for Sunette Viljoen, Fumiko Kikuchi and Xaert Pretorius. povvera is not a white cube where objects sit in a neutral environment, but a room with walls that have been deliberately left to show previous marks, which in turn changes how other objects or occurrences in the space are experienced.
Viljoen responds to the walls with a cladding installation that points to traces of production and material processes, which also sets the scene for the collaborative event of Pretorius and Kikuchi. As an extension of the reflexive, ceremonial discourse injected into the event format, they will each initiate a separate repertoire of linguistic interventions.
The event concerns itself with modes of cognition and with communicative and material processes and their results—eliciting lapses of comprehension, moments of hesitance and a reliance on conjecture.

Berlin Scars: Jozef Ibarr

Starting from the premise that everyone has a scar, the artist Jozef Ibarr began his extensive research of scar collecting in Berlin because as he sees it "scars extend beyond people: even innate objects with a history can experience the painful imprints marked by time." Hence: the city of Berlin with its extensive and hurtful past can serve as clear example. Take the Berlin Wall, or what remains, here you can picture, literally, a physical scar that for 28 yrs cut the city in two. Every scar begins with a painful story, but not every scar story needs to end in pain. Berlin Scars is three part project comprised first by a photo collection of the many physical and palpable scars that can be seen by the naked eye, any time, almost everywhere in the city. It's also a collection of photos and stories of scars amassed by interviewing people in Berlin. And last but not least, it's a photographic project created with diptychs using the first two parts of the project (city's scars and people's scars) to show the viewer the uncanny similarities of the two. With this method Jozef Ibarr tries to re-emphasize the already stated above: scars extend beyond people.

Scientifically separated into categories on an atomic level, what is the actual state of matter? In their exhibition, artists Kika Jonsson and Ivo Gretener examine the materials on our planet and how movement and modification affects them. Material objects have malleable lives, where a picture can become a symbol, or the remnants from a terrorist attack can be recycled into a battleship. The line between original intent and actual use is blurred.
Kika Francisca Jonsson (b. USA, 1979) studied at California College of the Arts and has been based in Berlin since 2010. She works in detailed, large scale graphite drawings that manipulate found images. Her work examines the inherently political nature of the physical landscape, and manifests a fascination with real and imagined borders.

Symmetry is an expression of order and proportionality of individual elements of a whole: we feel the entirety as beautiful and harmonious.
Symmetry as a dualistic structure (our world) is also a universal model of thinking, namely thinking in opposites and poles: light and dark; man and woman; right and left; good and evil; plus and minus; matter and antimatter, just to mention a few examples of polarities. They must always be considered together, because one pole cannot be described without the other, as one side of something symmetrical cannot be understood to the exclusion of other side. A pole cannot be defined for itself, it is a "mutual measure" (symmetros).
An oasis is a place that is defined by its polarity to what surrounds it. It is understood as a desirable spot in the desert, a place of longing, a metaphorical paradise, the opposite of all unspeakable things.
Within what symmetries we are moving today?
Does symmetry provide us with different perspective on the complex structures of everyday life /society?
How do people locate themselves in broken symmetries and asymmetric decay?
Does it inspire a feeling of calm in you, while liberating your spirit?
The striving for development dynamics between symmetry and asymmetry, the negotiation of ratios and proportions in the aesthetic field, as well as questions about their place in our time, span a poetic space: explore these six international artists in the exhibition Symmetry Oasis.

Mind Cloud Town – Wolkenkuckucksheim – Ann Mc Cormick with Klang from Urban Blau / Du&Ich-Projekt

Mind Cloud Town will be set up by me at povvera from the 4th to the 18th of June.
The Klang-installation is produced by Urban Blau.
The inspiration for the work is my experience of the urban environment. I am interested in the exploration of the relationship between painting and real space, the urban environment and the perception of space; the ties between art and the environment, materials and context, art criticism and marketing.
In this Installation I am using simple materials with simple shapes to compose a painting in time and space using shades of light, shadow and colour. Form, structure, content and meaning will be approached in a light playful, almost meditative way.
Urban Blau´s Klang-installation is based on the urban environment. It adds another level of the senses to the installation work.
The installation can be seen from 15:00 - 19:00 from the 19th to the 23rd of June 2015.

Deenesh Ghyczy: work in progress

From April 18 until April 25 the German/Hungarian artist Deenesh Ghyczy will be working on a wall piece at povvera. You can witness the daily progress from noon until 6 pm. The final result will be inaugurated on Sunday April 26 from 3 until 6 pm. The next day the wall will be brought back into it´s original state.
The duo "Ustone" will perform live during the opening on Sunday.
Deenesh Ghyczy uses photos of friends and acquaintances as a basis for his paintings of the human body. These images share something personal, intimate and authentic. The protagonists rest in themselves, are with themselves. Our multilayered reality with all it´s contradictions and simultaneity is revealed by means of fragmentation, distortion or dissolution. Irritating of our sense of equilibrium it opens the gate to an inner perception.
The different series on which he works also mirror indirectly his daily experiences and incorporate impressions from his surroundings. Currently Deenesh is focussing on the state of zero gravity as a mental process. A reoccurring subject where people are embedded into a painted field of energy, almost dissolving into it´s vibration. For Deenesh the challenge of the symbiosis of an intuitive/abstract and a cognitive/photorealistic way of painting, is to minimise the amount of visual information.

BOBÓ- an early spring mix of sounds, images, and taste

Bobó is a typical meal in the Northeast of Brazil. Originated from Africa, it is a puree made with shrimps, cassava, palm oil, coconut milk, and coriander. Bobó in Portuguese also means mixture. Under the umbrella of Bobó, povvera not only offers the enjoyment of this appetizing Brazilian delicacy, but also the shared consumption of a mixture of cultures: that of music and art!
During the event you will discover collages by Spanish artist Jorge Chamarro, who uses the images of the others. By reassembling found pictures, he creates a new experience and reframes our media-aestheticized world. Submerging even deeper into Bobó, you can listen to the newly founded musical duo formed by the Brazilian singer Cecília Kleine and the Russian singer and guitarist Ilja Boldakow. Playing Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and English songs, they build up a musical collage from Bossa Nova to Russian folk ballads, passing by funky and groovy moments. For a few melodies Brazilian cellist Fred Malverde will join them, who will add the last element to our mix.

Diverse decisive historical moments will be displayed for an evening: those that shifted political structures, altered existing systems, struggled to modify existence, or at least had the ambition to reshape social matters.
We invite you to celebrate the birthday of Life and look back at how Life honored the past anniversaries of its Creation.

During this afternoon povvera introduces 14 bikes in front of the 14 buildings of Philippistrasse, Charlottenburg for free use – in the hope, that nobody will lock them.
These bikes are repaired and painted in order to empower free-sharing and help bike-less people in Berlin, where half a million people using human-powered two-wheeler every day.
The project is a hommage to the White Bicycle Plan of the group Provo, made in 1966, Amsterdam. In their manifesto they pronounced that “white bicycle symbolises simplicity and healthy living, as opposed to the gaudiness and filth of the authoritarian automobile.”
The conveyance will be accompanied by diverse performances and povvera's souvenir shop for this utopian occasion will be unlocked as well.
It is possible to leave from the event with one of the bikes, and spread green ideas and povvera likes in Berlin.

H Ÿ P E R L O C A L

H Ÿ P E R L O C A L connotes information oriented around a well defined community with its primary focus directed toward the concerns of its residents. Use of the term originated in 1991, in reference to local television news content. The term has been recently adopted by the Browser Based group for what turned out to be a series of exhibitions of browser based art and net.art. In the networked world of today, the concept of HŸPERLOCAL can be understood not only as stationary, tied to a particular location, but also portable, tied to a specific body.
From the artist's perspective this brings a few direct consequences
- the role of curator is being challenged (and basically being made obsolete) - anyone can make an exhibition in any space
- artworks which are normally only visible online are suddenly tied to a physical space allowing authors and/or audience members to interact directly
- the concepts of public and private space can be completely redefined by the artworks.
We will install modified WIFI router-server(s) that will carry H Ÿ P E R L O C A L channel to present a variety of works from members of BrowserBased collective as well as bring the downloadable software package it is running on to the Charlottenburg community in and around povvera.

From pretext to horse-meat – an evening with the First World War

povvera remembers the Great War with a process-based event of authentic food, objects, texts and images
On the late sunny morning of the 28th of June, 1914, Gavrilo Princip, who had given up his initial plan, was standing in front of the Delicatessen Schiller on Franz Joseph street with disappointment. While munching on his sandwich, he was thinking with annoyance of Nedeljko Cabrinovic’s failed attempt to murder Franz Ferdinand. He postponed to rush to the shelter in the outskirts, provided by the Black Hand, although he knew that the best would be to make it until the noisy mass of people fill the city center. Suddenly, his attention was drawn by a murmur: a cabriolet showed up and was heading down the street. The crown prince was sitting inside with his companions. Gavrilo started to sweat and tremble. He saw a terrific vision: unknown machines were thundering, shooting bullets accompanied with unbearable sound and stench. Abruptly, an enthusiastic spectator tossed him and knocked out the sandwich from his hand. This unexpected interlude put him off and drove him back to his plan. He reached for his Browning and departed for the over and over imagined route. Not to be marked out from the celebrating crowd, his mouth curved into a grotesque smile while his eyes were just fixing on his target....

While munching on his sandwich, he was thinking with annoyance of Nedeljko Cabrinovic’s failed attempt to murder Franz Ferdinand. He postponed to rush to the shelter in the outskirts, provided by the Black Hand, although he knew that the best would be to make it until the noisy mass of people fill the city center. Suddenly, his attention was drawn by a murmur: a cabriolet showed up and was heading down the street. The crown prince was sitting inside with his companions. Gavrilo started to sweat and tremble. He saw a terrific vision: unknown machines were thundering, shooting bullets accompanied with unbearable sound and stench. Abruptly, an enthusiastic spectator tossed him and knocked out the sandwich from his hand. This unexpected interlude put him off and drove him back to his plan. He reached for his Browning and departed for the over and over imagined route. Not to be marked out from the celebrating crowd, his mouth curved into a grotesque smile while his eyes were just fixing on his target....

Entremundos ("Between Worlds" in portuguese) is a project that emerged from the meeting of the cellist Fred Malverde and the singer and set designer Cecília Kleine.
It is our development from the concept of music as ambience, seeking to build different atmospheres. Starting from the idea that music has a mystical power that surpasses any label, the duo transpass the "classical x popular" dichotomy and brings to the stage their varied experiences that comes from orchestra practices, lyrical choirs, jazz's groups, choro and tango, improvisation practices and experiments with minimalist inspiration.

Nemes and Orsolya Kalász reflect on the topics of the history of the automatisation of the Self, transcending the cult of the intimate lyricism. The reading is followed by the experimental concert of Tóth Kína Hegyfalu.

2014. április 6-án a rendszerváltás utáni hetedik országgyűlési választásra kerül sor Magyarországon, amely először történik a 2012. január 1-én hatályba lépett új alaptörvény szabályai szerint.
a povvera ezen jelentőségteljes alkalomból fél napos munkatábort szervez, ahol a megjelentek a munka mellett a választási eredmények alakulását is követhetik – vagyis a német fővárosban élők a feldolgozottsági adatok és a napi események figyelemmel kísérése és megvitatása közepette a magyar miniszterelnök által szorgalmazott „munkaalapú társadalom” reprezentálását is megkísérlik.
a munkatábor ideje alatt elvégzendő munkát, altorjay gábor ötlete alapján, az 1960-as évek közepén működött holland aktivista csoport, a Provo egyik akciója ihlette. kezdeményezésük szerint a belvárosból ki kell tiltani a kocsikat, és évente 20 ezer bárki által ingyenesen használható biciklit kell a városnak biztosítania. a hivatal nem hagyta jóvá tervüket, így önerőből helyeztek ki szabadon használható fehérre festett bicikliket.
Altorjay Gábor ötlete alapján a fenti esemény felelevenítése végett a választás napján a munkatábor tehát biciklik megjavításából és lefestéséből áll majd Kaldenekker Péter ex-biciklisfutár vezetésével. a projekt egyrészt a povvera hírvivőjéül szolgál majd a városban, másrészt jelentősen hozzájárul ahhoz, hogy bemutassunk egy a közösségi és szociális környezetet ökológiai, ökonómiai és egészségügyi szempontból is javítani kívánó alternatívát.
a résztvevőknek munkájukért cserébe a recski munkatáborból fennmaradt visszaemlékezések alapján a Libatop által elképzelt egytálételt és kávét kínálunk.
